The Rules You MUST Know to Keep Your Funding
1. The R350k Rule: Do You Qualify?
You can read all the lists you want. But if you don’t qualify, it’s a waste of time. Here is the real deal.
- Standard household income: Under R350,000 per year.
- Disability status: Income threshold up to R600,000 per year.
- SASSA recipients: You qualify automatically for financial eligibility. Just apply.
One more thing. If you live with a guardian and they are unemployed with no proof of income, you sign an affidavit at a police station. That works.
2. The N+2 Rule (Don’t Fail!)
NSFAS uses the N+2 rule. This means they will fund you for the minimum number of years required to finish your course (N), plus two additional years (+2) if you fail a year or change courses. Once you exceed this, your funding stops forever.
What Does NSFAS Actually Pay For?
People always ask about the allowances. Here is the breakdown.
- Tuition and registration: 100% covered. Paid directly to the college.
- Learning materials: An annual allowance for books, equipment, and a laptop if needed for your course.
- Personal care: A monthly stipend for basics like food and toiletries.
- Accommodation or transport: This depends on the 40km rule. If you live more than 40km from campus, NSFAS gives you either a travel allowance or accommodation near the college. You don’t choose. They decide based on your situation.
Do not expect cash in your hand for everything. Some funds go straight to the college or a mobile wallet system.
Red Flag Section: Private Colleges Are NOT Funded
This is where people get scammed.
Some private colleges will tell you they can help you apply for NSFAS or claim they are NSFAS approved. In most cases, that is just marketing language designed to attract students.
Here is the reality: NSFAS funding is meant for public TVET colleges. The colleges listed above are the recognised public institutions that qualify for NSFAS support. Private colleges do not automatically qualify simply because they mention NSFAS in their advertisements.
Always verify claims before registering. If a private college says NSFAS will cover your studies, ask them to provide official proof or written confirmation from NSFAS. Many students only discover the truth later when they are asked to pay large outstanding fees themselves.
This is how students get trapped. They register believing their tuition is funded, continue studying for months, and later receive bills running into tens of thousands of rand because no funding was approved.
To avoid unnecessary financial problems, stick to verified public TVET colleges when applying for NSFAS funding. That is the safest option.
