Profile
Richards Bay is one of South Africa’s most industrially significant port cities, and it needs a steady pipeline of skilled, work-ready people to keep it running. uMfolozi TVET College has been filling that pipeline for years.
Based on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast and serving communities from Esikhawini and Empangeni all the way up to Eshowe, Nkandla, Mandeni, and beyond, this is a college that’s deeply connected to the economic reality of its region.
The college operates eight main campuses, which is an unusually wide footprint for a single institution. The flagship Richtek Campus sits on Naboomnek Street in the Arboretum suburb of Richards Bay, close to the port and within reasonable reach of the CBD by taxi. It’s the college’s engineering and technical hub, equipped with heavy machinery workshops and specialist facilities that support trades like instrumentation and millwright; skills that are in direct demand at the smelters, coal terminal, and processing plants that define the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone.
The Richtek Campus feels modern, while Bambanana and Nkandla campuses serve deep rural communities with agricultural training and community-focused programmes. Esikhawini Campus, one of the larger sites, brings civil engineering, construction trades, and business studies to a township community south of Empangeni. The Mandeni and Chief Albert Luthuli campuses extend that reach even further.
Six additional skills centres, including Nseleni, Alton, and the Maphumulo Skills Centre, mean that short courses and foundational training reach communities that would otherwise be left out entirely.
The Technical Training Centres at both Richtek and Mandeni are MERSETA-accredited trade test centres, covering trades like electrician, fitter and turner, and instrument mechanic. That accreditation matters enormously for students who want a formal artisan qualification that industry will actually recognise. The college also has a partnership with the South African International Maritime Institute, reflecting a genuine commitment to positioning students for the growing ocean economy.
Student accommodation is available at Richtek and Esikhawini, and NSFAS funding is accessible to qualifying students across all campuses.
