Profile
Western TVET College has earned its place as the go-to skills hub for the West Rand in Gauteng. Young people from Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Carletonville and nearby areas know they can walk out with qualifications that actually open doors in local mines, factories and businesses, without having to head into the city.
The college traces its roots to 2002, when the old Carletonville and Randfontein Technical Colleges merged to form one stronger institution. Over the years it added campuses in Krugersdorp and Krugersdorp West, brought Carletonville back into the fold, and opened a satellite in Westonaria. Today you’ll find its five sites spread across the West Rand, each one part of the everyday fabric of these mining and industrial towns. The main administrative office sits right in Randfontein.
Public transport run regularly from Johannesburg and the nearby townships, so you don’t need a car to get sorted.
What really marks Western TVET College out from the rest is how tightly its programmes match the local economy. Engineering studies from N3 to N6 remain the standout, building on the region’s long history in mining and manufacturing. You’ll also find solid business studies, hospitality NCV and Nated courses, occupational programmes, and information technology – all designed to give students the exact skills employers in the West Rand are looking for.
It’s not about being the biggest or flashiest TVET college in Gauteng; it’s about staying relevant to the communities it serves and offering a genuine alternative to university for school-leavers and working adults alike.
The college’s Student Support Services team helps with academic and personal challenges, while NSFAS funding covers tuition, transport and living allowances for those who qualify.
