Profile
Located against the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the QwaQwa region of the north-eastern Free State, Maluti TVET College carries a quiet significance that’s easy to underestimate from the outside. This is a TVET college in Phuthaditjhaba that serves one of the most geographically remote yet densely populated corners of the province, and it does so with a reach that extends across eight campuses — from the mountain-facing Main Campus on Mampoi Street right through to Bethlehem, Harrismith, and the rural settlement of Tseki Village.
The college was formally established on 1 September 2002 when the Free State MEC for Education merged several legacy institutions, including Bonamelo and Sefikeng Colleges of Education, and the technical colleges at Itemoheleng, Bethlehem, Kwetlisong, and Lere la Tshepe, into a single, unified institution.
Maluti TVET College is accredited by Umalusi and a number of Sector Education and Training Authorities, which means the qualifications you earn here carry real weight with employers. TVET courses at the college span three broad areas — Engineering Studies, Business Studies, and Utility Studies — with programmes like Electrical Engineering, Hospitality, Financial Management, and Management Assistant drawing steady enrolment.
The NCV (National Certificate Vocational) and NATED Report 191 are both available, and the college’s placement test system helps new students land in programmes that genuinely suit them, rather than ones they’ll struggle through.
The Main Campus sits right on Phuthaditjhaba’s central thoroughfare, Mampoi Street, alongside the college’s Central Office — so it’s easily accessible by taxi and on foot from most parts of the town. Students who need to travel further to satellite campuses will find they’re all within reasonable reach of the taxi routes that criss-cross the region.
Financially, Maluti TVET College is one of South Africa’s 50 public TVET colleges eligible for NSFAS funding, which is a significant practical advantage. There are no application fees, and the financial aid office actively assists qualifying students through the bursary process.
