Working Collaboratively with Families: Understanding and Communicating with Families of Persons with Disabilities

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

• Explain the needs of persons with disabilities to their families
• List the life cycle stages of families with persons with disabilities
• Identify areas of impact on families in having persons with disabilities
• Identify the stages of grief of families with persons with disabilities
• Use communication strategies to establish partnership with families

What You'll Learn

Working with families of persons with disabilities involves helping them understand their needs and their grief journey. This course helps learners to understand the needs of families and the feelings of parents at the different stages of the grief journey and the sources of support for parents of persons with disabilities. Learners will also examine life cycle stages and emotional impact on families. It will also equip learners with a range of communication strategies to translate these needs to their families.

Minimum Entry Requirement

The skills and knowledge for this course, which the learner is assumed to possess, are as follows:

• A minimum of GCE 'N' Level with credits including English Language as a first language; or
• Be able to listen, speak, read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills Workforce Skills Qualifications (ES WSQ) Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 5
