Western Music Within a Singaporean Context

Learners will examine the relationship and develop perspectives on Singaporean identity with Singaporean music in terms of genres, venues, educational institutions, and geographical location. Through research and information synthesis, learners will be able to connect factual evidence to their personal experiences, and have a pragmatic understanding of the musical landscape in Singapore. Through this process, effective communication skills and critical thinking will be honed.

What You'll Learn

This course critically analyses Singapore's historical and present-day relationship with Western music, examining its influences on and integration into our culture and society, and its role in our self-identification. Learners will develop their socio-historical and contemporary perspectives through investigating various case studies. Through honing research and information synthesis skills, learners will critically consider how Singapore and Singaporeans have shaped and been shaped by music from the West, and be equipped with research thinking to make decisions in negotiating this cultural correspondence moving forward. Such skills will be applied through looking at historical overview of the arrival of Western music in Singapore and the various functions that music plays and has played in society.

At least 5 years of performing/teaching experience and/or successful outcome of the selection interview
