This foundation module aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and underlying principles of systems thinking, as well as modeling methods and tools that are applicable to the design of industrial systems. The topics in this module include introductory systems concepts, mental models and causal loop diagrams, while the modeling methods and tools to be covered include that of operations research and data analysis. The application of these topics to simple systems design problems will be illustrated through laboratory sessions. Real-world case studies will be presented to show how these concepts have been applied in industrial contexts.
What You'll Learn
Students should a) understand how end hosts and intermediate devices are inter-connected to form the Internet; b) understand how information are transmitted from one host to another; c) understand the concepts of a protocol, and key protocols that are needed for the Internet to function (IP, TCP, DHCP, ARP, SMTP, HTTP, DNS); d) understand how a networked system can be attacked and basic concepts of how to protect the system. Module covers a range of topics including basic computer network concepts, protocols, network computing concepts and principles, networked applications development and network security.
Minimum Entry Requirement
Engineering diploma or professionals working in the industry holding any degree and had done mathematics and a science subject at A-level or equivalent
