Sociolinguistics and Education

TSL505 explores fundamental concepts and theories in sociolinguistics. This course coves areas such as multilingualism, code-choice, language variation, dialectology, interactional studies, gender, language contact, language and inequality, and language and power. Current debates in areas like creolisation, globalisation, language death and language planning are also discussed. Special attention is placed on how an understanding of the operation of these variables bears on the issues of language policy, planning and education practice in Singapore and elsewhere.
