Outdoor Leadership Series Sports Climbing Instructor Category 1 (classroom and Asynchronous E-Learning)

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

• Knowledge of the development of sport climbing in Singapore & the teaching syllabus.
• Select and use appropriate climbing equipment & gear for Singapore National Climbing Standards (SNCS) Courses and personal instructional purpose.
• Demonstrate and explain the teaching of top-rope & lead belaying techniques.
• Demonstrate and explain the teaching of spotting, bouldering, top-rope & lead climbing.
• Demonstrate and explain the teaching of safe abseil techniques.
• Demonstrate practical and theoretical knowledge of an anchor system suitable for top-roping, belaying, abseiling, including systems using multiple anchors, slings, climbing rope or a combination of both.
• Identify safety concerns on bouldering, top-rope & lead climbing/belaying; and develop an attitude of safety.
• Knowledge on rescue techniques appropriate for wall climbing instruction
• Knowledge on group management, risk assessment, method of instructions and professionalism. The course fee doesn't include instructor application fee of $50 and license fee of $70, both to to Singapore Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (SSCMF).

What You'll Learn

Over the recent years, sport climbing has been gaining popularity in Singapore. Many schools incorporate climbing walls as part of their student development activity. Likewise, outdoor institutes/ companies include climbing as part of their outdoor programme. Interest groups such as outdoor learning clubs or Outdoor Adventures and Activities Club (ODAC) often pursue Singapore Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (SSCMF) certified climbing courses such as Singapore National Climbing Standards (SNCS) level 1, 2 and 3.This course is for educators, outdoor specialists or member of public who are aspired to teach SSCMF certified climbing courses in their area of work or interest. The programme is designed to meet the standards set by SSCMF under the Sports Climbing Instructor Category 1. It consists of 3 full days of practical session in Republic Polytechnic's Xperiential Learning Center (XLC). The lessons will be conducted using self-directing eLearning packages as well as Cognitive Apprenticeship (CA) approach to optimize the learning experience across the participants and trainer. Facilitation skills such as Method of Instruction, class management, lesson planning, risk assessment will be introduced. As part of learning, participant will be given feedback through role plays or/and scenarios.

Minimum Entry Requirement

• Proficiency in English• At least 18 yrs of age as at course date• Hold a SNCS Sport Climbing Level 3 certification or Sport Climbing Activity Supervisor certification or equivalent (equivalent – subject to approval)• Be able to lead a 5.10 grade route on artificial climbing wall for Sport Climbing Instructor assessment
