This course provides an introduction to the principles of data visualization, with emphasis on human visual perception and design elements (e.g. lines, color, shape, texture, image, and graph). It explores the fundamental issues regarding the use of visualization techniques and examines visualization design principles in various situations and contexts from the perspective of cognitive psychology and human visual perception. In particular, this course will cover the following subjects: visual communication; perception and cognition, cognitive science of decision making; visual elements effect; interactivity; visual processing, and storytelling. The course also introduces fundamental coding concepts in information visualization, where learners will learn how to use various tools such as Tableau and D3.js whilst applying the design principles. It is intended for those interested in acquiring coding skills and application awareness in the areas of visual elements and data information processing.

- Define each step of the information visualization pipeline including data selection, representation, presentation, and interaction.
