Fundamentals of Food Microbiologyâ (part of SCTP Certificate in Food Safety and Analysis) (classroom and Async E-Learning)

This is one of the modules offered for the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme Certificate in Food Safety and Analysis which is a structured 3-month programme aimed at equipping participants with essential knowledge and hands-on skills in food safety, microbiology, and quality management systems. The course prepares participants to meet the increasing demands for food safety professionals such QA&QC Supervisors, QA&QC Specialist / Food Safety Specialist, Laboratory Technician / QC Technician in the food industry by focusing on practical and theoretical aspects of food science, safety regulations and analytical methods.

What You'll Learn

This module aims to provide students with fundamental microbiological knowledge in food science. This module will introduce to students various groups of microorganism, factors affecting their growth and the methods of cultivation.

At the end of the learning unit, learners will be able to:

• Describe the various groups of microorganisms and their impact in human beings.
• Differentiate prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms based on their structures, functions and cellular organization.
• Discuss the factors affecting growth and metabolism of foodborne microorganisms based on microbial growth characteristics.

Minimum Entry Requirement

Target learners (MER)

• GCE 'O' Level(with Minimum of 3 relevant GCE 'O' Levels passes and 1 year relevant working experience)
• NITEC or Higher NITEC learners from the NITEC in Applied Food Science, NITEC in Chemical Process Technology, Higher NITEC in Chemical Technology, Higher NITEC in Biotechnology and Higher NITEC in Applied Food Science.
• Diploma graduates (any disciplines)
• Any relevant formal certificate

Recognition for Prior learning (RPL) for Food Science

• At least 2 years of relevant working experience (subject to interview/assessment)

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to be course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or proficiency test.
