Profile
There aren’t many TVET colleges in South Africa that can claim eight campuses, a footprint spanning three major Free State towns, and a founding story rooted in genuine community consolidation, but Maluti TVET College is one of them. Based in Phuthaditjhaba with its central office on Mampoi Street, this is a college that was built deliberately, by merging several former technical and education colleges into one institution that could actually serve the north-eastern Free State at scale.
The college was formally established on 1 September 2002, when the Free State MEC for Education brought together institutions including Bonamelo, Sefikeng, Itemoheleng, Bethlehem, Kwetlisong and Lere la Tshepe under a single roof. That merger wasn’t just administrative tidying; it created a college with the resources, campuses and community trust that none of those institutions could have built alone. Today, students from Phuthaditjhaba, Harrismith, Bethlehem and the surrounding QwaQwa region all have a campus within reasonable reach.
Programme offerings cover both the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) stream and the Report 191 National Certificate route, from N1 through to N6 in engineering and business studies. Engineering courses at Maluti TVET College follow the traditional artisan pathway, N1 to N3 lays the foundation, and students who complete N6 and the required in-service training can apply for a National Diploma in Engineering. It’s a structured, industry-recognised route into the trades that South Africa genuinely needs.
The college is accredited by Umalusi and holds accreditation with several SETAs, which gives its qualifications real currency in the job market.
What Maluti TVET College also takes seriously is financial access. There’s a dedicated financial aid unit that supports academically capable students who can’t afford the fees; and with tuition ranging from roughly R2,000 to R30,000 depending on the programme, that kind of support makes a tangible difference. No registration fee is charged for NCV and Report 191 courses, which lowers the barrier even further.
