Profile
Ikhala TVET College has been a steady anchor for young people in the Northern Region of the Eastern Cape since it opened its doors on 1 April 2002. Formed by merging several former technical colleges, it brought together decades of hands-on training experience and set about serving communities that stretch from the open plains around Aliwal North right through to the rolling hills near Sterkspruit.
In Ezibeleni, just outside Queenstown, the Engineering Campus sits at the heart of things, giving students from Chris Hani and surrounding districts a practical place to build real skills without having to travel far from home.
The college runs a solid mix of National Certificate Vocational (NC(V)) and Report 191 programmes that speak directly to local needs. You’ll find strong offerings in engineering studies at the Ezibeleni campus — think Electrical Infrastructure Construction, Engineering and Related Design, and Civil Engineering.
On the business side, programmes in Finance, Economics and Accounting, Generic Management, and Information Technology and Computer Science prepare students for both formal employment and starting their own ventures. Hospitality and tourism courses also feature where demand exists.
What sets Ikhala apart is its clear focus on industry-ready training. Partnerships with local businesses and SETAs mean students spend time in workshops that mirror actual workplaces, picking up the kind of experience employers in the Eastern Cape actually look for.
Life on campus feels grounded and supportive. The Ezibeleni site has a no-nonsense, practical atmosphere where lecturers know most students by name and the workshops stay busy from early morning. Public transport links from Queenstown and surrounding towns make it straightforward to reach. Taxis and buses drop off regularly, and the campus is close enough to town that students can sort out daily needs without hassle.
Student support includes access to bursaries through NSFAS, academic counselling, and ongoing efforts to improve facilities and services. Recent years have seen the college inaugurate its Student Representative Council, host a thoughtful State of the College Address, and keep pushing curriculum updates to stay relevant.
