Profile
Few TVET colleges in South Africa operate within such a clearly defined industrial environment as Lephalale TVET College. Located in the Greater Waterberg District of Limpopo and surrounded by major energy infrastructure such as the Matimba and Medupi power stations, the college does far more than provide general vocational education. It trains students for the technical and practical roles that the energy and mining industries in this part of the country actively depend on.
The college traces its roots to the former Ellisras TVET College, a name still familiar to many long-time residents of Lephalale. It was established through the merger of two institutions with different histories, and that background has helped shape a college with a strong community presence and a practical understanding of local needs. Today, Lephalale TVET College operates two campuses. The main Lephalale Campus is situated on the corner of Nelson Mandela and Ngoako Ramatlhodi Drives in Onverwacht, while the Modimolle Campus further south expands access to TVET education for students across the lower Waterberg region.
The Lephalale Campus serves as the college’s engineering centre, and its programme offerings reflect the realities of the surrounding economy. Electrical infrastructure construction and mechanical engineering are particularly relevant in a town dominated by power generation and mining activity. The N1 to N6 NATED engineering pathway provides students with a structured route towards recognised artisan qualifications, preparing them for industries where technical skills remain in constant demand. Programmes in fitting and turning, electrical engineering, and civil engineering and building construction all form part of the engineering offering.
Alongside its technical training, the college also maintains a strong business studies division. Courses in human resource management, business management, and financial management are available from N4 to N6 level, giving students pathways into administrative and commercial careers. Hospitality and catering services are also offered, reflecting the growing tourism potential of the Waterberg region and the need for skilled workers beyond the industrial sector.
Student support services play an important role across both campuses. NSFAS funding is available for qualifying students, and each campus has a bursary office that assists directly with funding applications and financial guidance. Career guidance services are also available to help students make informed decisions about their studies and future employment opportunities.
