Profile
Pietermaritzburg is a city shaped by history, and its main TVET institution carries a responsibility that reflects that. Umgungundlovu TVET College, widely known as UTVET, serves as the primary vocational centre for the Msunduzi Municipality and the broader KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. With eleven campuses spread across the city and extending into areas like Msinga and Richmond, the college is structured to reach students from diverse communities, not just those within easy reach of a single campus.
One of UTVET’s most practical strengths lies in how its campuses are organised. Rather than trying to offer everything everywhere, each campus is built around specific disciplines, with facilities designed to match. Edendale Campus focuses on civil engineering, offering NCV and diploma programmes that cover key construction trades. Plessislaer Campus, located in Imbali, serves as the mechanical engineering centre, with programmes in fitting and turning, fabrication, automotive work, tooling, and electrical studies across both NCV and NATED streams. Northdale Campus combines electrical engineering with hospitality training, while the Midlands and Msunduzi campuses are geared towards business studies, financial management, and computer literacy.
At UTVET, you do not apply to the college in general. You apply directly to the campus that offers your chosen programme. It is a more structured approach than many institutions take, but it comes with a clear advantage. Students train in workshops and labs dedicated to their specific field rather than sharing facilities across unrelated disciplines.
Applications are handled online through the college’s iEnabler portal, and all prospective students are required to complete a placement assessment in numeracy and language before applying. While it may seem like an added step, it serves a clear purpose by helping match students to programmes where they are most likely to succeed.
Financial support is available through NSFAS for qualifying students, and transport allowances are commonly accessed by those commuting from surrounding communities such as Imbali and Edendale.
