Profile
Soweto is home to one of the largest townships in Africa, and it makes sense that the TVET college rooted there is one of the biggest in the country. South West Gauteng TVET College, known widely as SWGC, serves communities across Soweto, Roodepoort, and Randburg through seven campuses, and its enrolment numbers consistently place it among the top public TVET colleges in South Africa by headcount. For young people in the south-west of Johannesburg, it’s often the most logical and most accessible step after school.
The college’s head office is based at Molapo Campus on Molele Street in Soweto, right in the heart of the communities it was built to serve. From there, campuses spread outward to Dobsonville, Naledi, Roodepoort, Roodepoort West, and the Technisa Campus in Randburg, which drives the college’s distance learning and e-learning offering. Not many public TVET colleges in Gauteng have invested as seriously in online learning as SWGC has, which means students who can’t attend in person still have options.
TVET courses in Johannesburg at SWGC cover engineering, business studies, IT, hospitality, tourism, educare, public management, and art and culture, among others. Electrical engineering at South West Gauteng TVET College is a popular draw, given the demand for trade-related skills in the surrounding economy.
The college offers both NCV and NATED programmes, and its occupational qualifications link classroom learning directly to workplace training. SWGC is accredited by Umalusi and several SETAs, so qualifications carry real weight with employers.
One genuinely distinctive feature is the “Land is Wealth Farm” at Sterkfontein, a dedicated site for primary agriculture training that’s attached to the college. It’s not something you find at many urban TVET colleges, and it speaks to a deliberate effort to broaden what vocational education can mean for students.
